Despite the fact it is still November, I surrender and have gone full blown into the Christmas season. Baby steps. Why not, the stores have had Christmas decorations up since September. We also have a lot of great things coming up for this congregation.
December 9th: The special Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s. This is a fund raiser for our young people to help them go to Winterfest. The tickets are $14 with $10 given back to our teens. Please see any of our youth to purchase tickets on Wednesdays or Sundays. Why not get a good breakfast, for a good cause, before going out Christmas shopping.
December 10th: The annual Christmas Party at the Heritage Center @ 5pm. Some of the ladies have been planning for a great evening for all of us. Put on your favorite Christmas sweater (or t-shirt) and find someone in the church you can get to know better. Don’t forget to sign up for food/drinks in the foyer. We are less than two weeks away. NOTE: This will also be our monthly Sunday night get together rather than the first Sunday night of the month.
The youth will be enjoying a scavenger hunt leading up to the Christmas party. They will meet at the church building at 3:30 pm. Bring your phones (like I have to tell a teenager) and get ready for a fun evening.
December 20th: Christmas Caroling. For the last several years, we have taken the Wednesday before Christmas to send out groups to sing to our shut-ins and those who could use some Christmas cheer. Please let us know if there is someone you know who could be added to the list. The more people we have the better. Bonus: the journey is fun. I have never been on one of these that I didn’t enjoy my time with those singing with us. Usually we laugh more than we do actual singing. We are not looking for trained singers, only people who love to spread Christmas cheer.
December 24th: This year Christmas Eve lands on a Sunday. More to come…
December 31st: New Year’s Eve also lands on a Sunday. Those who were with us for our Thanksgiving program, don’t forget about your journal’s. On this day we will share some of those things together as well as get prepared for the New Year.
Honorable mention: January 7th will be our annual congregational meeting @ 5pm.
Staying with the Christmas theme: This Sunday we will begin a new sermon series called “White Christmas.” You might be surprised how often Scripture uses snow as a metaphor. I have a feeling this is as close to snow as we are going to get in Florida. This week we will discover, like a snowflake, the unique nature with which we were created.
Next week I will put out my favorite Christmas gift ideas.
THE WRAP UP: Christians should be the most generous people on earth. We, above everyone else, should realize the blessings we have been given from God. Besides the ability and talents He has given most of us to work, we have people in our lives that continue to bless us, including a church family. If you are a child of God, the Spirit lives in you and moves us to compassion and kindness toward others. Satan and his earthly kingdom will continue to influence us to put off those feelings and be caught up in a world of selfishness. Christmas cheer is wonderful, but Christian cheer goes beyond the season to a life of generosity.
